2 on 1 Ground Balls Drill Diagram

Drill Setup

  • Players will split into 3 even lines, two on one side of the Coach and one on the other.
  • THe two outermost lines are on the same team, while the middle line is on their own team.
  • The Coach stands in the middle with a supply of balls.
  • This drill can be ran anywhere on the field and in smaller groups if required.

Drill Execution

  1. The Coach rolls or bounces the ball out in front of the Players, the ball can be thrown short (5-10 yards) or long (10+ yards) to emphasize speed or physicality in the drill.
  2. Once the ball comes to a rest or is far enough away from the players, the Coach will blow the whistle to start the drill. The first player from each line sprints towards the ball.
  3. Players compete for the ground ball. On the team of two Players, one Player should "take the man" and box out the opposing player while the other teammate should recover the ball.
  4. The Player who gains possession of the ball rolls out to open space to make an outlet pass back to the Coach. The Player who lost the ground ball will try to disrupt.

Coaching Points

  • Competetiveness: The middle line, having a numbers disadvantage, will be expected to lose this drill. Players should battle hard to disruopt as much as possible or even win the ground ball.
  • Communication: Communication is key for the team of two players. One player that takes body position on the opponent should call out "Man" or "Body" while the Player going for th ball should shout "Ball".
  • Body Position: The Player responsible for boxing out should make sure to initiate contact and maintain effective body position to give their teammate time and spaceto scoop the loose ball.

Variations

  • Altered Start: Have the Players start on their stomachs or with their backs to the open field to add an additional chellenge to this drill.
  • Split by Position: Split the Players by position, with offensive players on the outer lines while the defensive players will populate the inner line.
